Physical & Sexual Abuse in Pennsylvania Nursing Homes
According to the National Center on Elder Abuse for every one case of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation reported to authorities, about five more go unreported. (National Elder Abuse Incidence Study: 1998. Washington, D.C.: National Center on Elder Abuse at American Public Human Services Association).
The Pennsylvania State Department of Aging reports that over 25 percent of substantiated reports of abuse involved physical abuse or sexual assault. Most reported cases of Physical and Sexual Abuse are made against nurse aides. This is because nurse aides constitute the largest number of employees and have the greatest access to patients. However, it is important to note that this does not mean that are employees are less likely to abuse. This is especially true in cases where abuse occurs in a single incident rather than over a period of time.
Physical and Sexual Abuse are criminal acts and the perpetrators may face jail time. It is extremely important that the police are notified as soon as possible so that a report can be filed and evidence can be collected. You do not want to give the Nursing Home or staff time to cover up their wrongdoing. If possible, try to take photographs of any visible bruising or abrasions.
If you believe that abuse is ongoing you should call the Police. Also contact the Elder Care Ombudsman who is responsible for investigating all crimes against Nursing Home Residents.
